Chennai Metro Phase II Project Reviewed
The Chennai Metro Rail Phase II project recently underwent a detailed review by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. This critical expansion aims to significantly bolster urban connectivity across Chennai, creating a more robust, accessible transportation network. Set to span over 118.9 kilometers, Phase II comprises three main corridors: Madhavaram-SIPCOT, Light House-Poonamallee, and Madhavaram-Sholinganallur. The project is projected to increase mobility options for Chennai residents, reduce traffic congestion, and foster sustainable urban development.
During the review meeting, officials from the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) presented progress reports and highlighted milestones achieved so far. The project, estimated to cost around INR 61,843 crore, is advancing through multiple construction stages, with extensive tunneling and viaduct work underway. The ambitious scale of this project, one of India’s largest metro expansion initiatives, is expected to strengthen economic growth in the region by enhancing connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial areas.
Chief Minister Stalin emphasized that timely completion of Phase II is essential to meeting the urban mobility needs of a growing Chennai, supporting both environmental goals and the city's economic development. Union Minister Puri echoed this sentiment, underscoring the federal government’s commitment to supporting infrastructure projects that improve quality of life and enable efficient, low-carbon transit options in urban centers.
The review meeting provided an opportunity for both state and central authorities to realign on project timelines and budget management. As the project progresses, the collaboration between state and federal stakeholders is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving sustainable transit solutions for Chennai, ultimately enhancing livability and economic vitality in one of India's major cities.
