Charmady Ghat two-way road work to begin January 2025
The long-anticipated construction of a two-way road on Charmady Ghat is set to commence in January 2025, contingent on timely land acquisition and departmental clearances. The project, awarded to SLV Construction (CHNV Reddy) at a bid 41% lower than competitors, aims to upgrade the ghat road to a 10-meter-wide stretch, consistent with the Punjalakatte to B.C. Road segment. Currently, sections of Charmady Ghat range from 5.5 to 7 meters in width.
The central government has allocated Rs 3.43 billion for the project, with Rs 1.75 billion designated for road construction and the remainder for ancillary costs, including land compensation and relocation of electricity poles and water pipes.
Of the 25 km ghat stretch, 11 km falls within Dakshina Kannada district, with the remainder in Chikkamagaluru district. While the work for the Dakshina Kannada portion has received approval up to the 12th bend, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Chikkamagaluru is still under preparation.
Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta highlighted the project’s potential to significantly benefit coastal region commuters and enhance goods transportation, fostering business growth. Forest Conservator Antony Mariappa noted that the assessment of affected trees and plants is pending, awaiting an appeal from the contractor.
Construction, expected to take 48 months, will begin in accessible areas. Temporary closures of the ghat, possibly lasting up to two months, are anticipated during the work. (daijiworld)
