Centre Approves Major Rail Projects to Enhance South Odisha Connectivity
The Ministry of Railways has approved multiple railway infrastructure projects in Odisha to improve connectivity, lower transportation costs, and drive economic growth. Key projects include the doubling of the Naupada-Gunupur-Theruvali rail line and the construction of the 250 km-long Gopalpur-Rayagada new rail line. To facilitate these projects, Rs 90.65 million has been allocated for the Final Location Survey (FLS).
Additionally, the ministry has sanctioned the Gunupur-Theruvali new rail line, spanning 73.62 km, with an estimated cost of Rs 13.26 billion. The state government has provided 473.78 hectares of land for this initiative, which is scheduled for completion within five years. The project aims to enhance connectivity in Rayagada district, enabling smoother transportation of goods and passengers.
The Gopalpur-Rayagada and Gunupur-Theruvali rail lines are expected to bring significant economic benefits by improving transportation efficiency and reducing logistical expenses in southern Odisha. The new routes will facilitate the movement of essential commodities such as agricultural products and minerals, lowering transportation costs and strengthening supply chain networks. This initiative aligns with national sustainability goals by promoting energy-efficient transportation solutions.
As part of the Gunupur-Theruvali rail line project, seven new stations will be developed to improve accessibility in the region, particularly in the aspirational Rayagada district. The project forms a crucial component of Indian Railways' energy, mineral, and cement corridors, further integrating regional and national economies.
The construction phase is expected to generate substantial employment, providing a boost to the local economy. By establishing vital infrastructure, these projects will support industrial growth, enhance trade, and improve transportation efficiency, contributing to Odisha’s long-term economic development.
