Carnac Bridge reconstruction enters phase with first girder installed

The reconstruction of the historic Carnac Bunder bridge has reached a significant milestone, with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) successfully positioning the first girder during the night between September 19 and 20.

The southside girder, weighing 550 tonnes, was slid into place over a span of 70 meters across the railway section, a process completed on October 14. This work was carried out under the technical supervision of MS RITES, following a plan approved by the Central Railway administration.

In addition, a BMC release announced that work on the bridge's approach road will commence shortly. Civic officials have stated that the assembly of the second girder will proceed simultaneously, with plans to complete its installation and remaining work by the end of December. The overall reconstruction is anticipated to be finished by May 2025. (ET)
