Campal Stadium Project Delayed

The football stadium and parade ground project in Campal, Panaji, which was initiated under the smart city plan, has yet to be completed, even though it is over a year past its original deadline. The project started on March 21, 2022, and according to the initial work order, it was supposed to be finished by September 20, 2023.

Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Ltd (IPSCDL) has reported that 98% of the work is complete, with the final 2% expected to be finished by March 2025. "A small area where the concrete batching plant is situated needs completion," they said.

The project's total estimated cost stands at Rs 30 crore (excluding taxes), funded in a 60:40 ratio by the state government and IPSCDL under the smart city mission. The project is being carried out by a contractor appointed by the Goa State Urban Development Agency. Its aim is to rejuvenate the Campal area of Panaji, turning it into a green space with a recreation center and smart parking facilities.

According to a senior official, the stadium and parade ground, covering an area of 41.1K square meters, will accommodate 1,000 people and provide parking for 136 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers. Additional features include a multipurpose lawn, a children’s play area, and an outdoor gym. The facility will also house a charging station for Kadamba Transport Corporation’s electric buses, following a government request.

IPSCDL confirmed that the ground will remain under the management of the smart city until the defect liability period concludes. After that, the government will decide the future maintenance and operations, including which agency or department will oversee the site.
