BMC Unveils Rs 744.27 Billion Budget, Revives ‘Mumbai Eye’ Project

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has presented its highest-ever budget of Rs 744.27 billion (bn) for 2025-26, marking a 14.19 per cent increase over the previous year. Among its key proposals is the revival of the ‘Mumbai Eye’ project under a private participation model, requiring two to three acres of land.

The budget prioritises infrastructure, with Rs 431.62 bn allocated for capital expenditure. Here are some of the highlights:

Work orders have been issued for 194 capacity multilevel Car parking near Apsara Pen Shop, Flora Fountain (Hutatma Chowk) in A Ward. Also, tender process for 640 Four Wheelers and 112 Two Wheeler space at Worli Engineering Hub in G/S ward and contractor has been appointed. In future the parking space available will be for around 834 vehicles. The budget provision for the proposed work is Rs 2 bn.
Waste to Energy (WTE) plant at Deonar Dumping Ground is expected to be commissioned by October 2025.
BMC has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) for setting up Bio-CNG plant with a capacity of about 1000 TPD MSW at Deonar Dumping Ground. Currently, process regarding Concession Agreement is underway.
Work of construction of new fire stations at Juhu Tara Road Santacruz (W), Mahul Road Chembur and Tilak Nagar will be undertaken shortly.
A ‘Mumbai Public Park’ is planned across 290 acres, combining 120.12 acres from the Royal Western India Turf Club and 170 acres reclaimed under the Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project. A consultant is preparing a design for the racecourse land, while an Expression of Interest (EOI) has been invited from companies to develop the remaining land as a Volunteer Agency without BMC’s financial commitment.
Under the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project, BMC plans to build a Tiger Monument in collaboration with the state’s forest and tourism departments. A suitable site will be identified within the tunnel passing under Sanjay Gandhi National Park.

Meanwhile, the BMC has urged the State Government to declare BMC’s Prestigious Projects such as Mumbai Coastal Road (South) Project, GMLR, Mumbai Coastal Road (North) Project (Versova to Dahisar), Elevated Road from Link Road in Dahisar (W) in BMC limits to Mira-Bhayander (W) in MBMC limits (Coastal Road Last Leg) as Vital Urban Transport Projects.
