In February 2023, the BMC had initiated the concretisation of 324 km of roads (698 roads) at a cost of Rs 60 billion, a project proposed by former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, with the goal of making Mumbai pothole-free within two years. However, by now, only 187 roads, or 26 per cent of the proposed length, have been concretised.

The slow progress has been attributed to multiple factors. While work orders were issued in February 2023, ground-level work could only begin in October of that year, after delays due to monsoon conditions. Additionally, the contractors involved were new to the city and faced delays in acquiring necessary permissions, further slowing the work. However, the situation has improved, and work is now progressing rapidly.

In a separate project initiated in December 2024, the BMC began the concretisation of 377 km of roads (720 roads) across Mumbai. The municipal commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, aims to achieve 50 per cent completion of this project in the next financial year.

In total, the BMC has allocated Rs 51 billion for various infrastructure projects under the roads and traffic department, including a Rs 2 billion plan for two multi-level robotic car parking facilities at Flora Fountain and Worli. The BMC is also working on a Mumbai walkability project to improve footpaths across the city.
