BIAL to Build 2.5 km Tunnel Road to Ease Bengaluru's Eastern Congestion
The Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) has announced plans to construct a 2.5-km tunnel road within the premises of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) to provide an alternative access route, which will ease traffic in the city's eastern parts. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 2 billion, is expected to be completed in three years.
The new tunnel access road, which will reduce the driving time by 30 minutes for residents of east Bengaluru, including Whitefield, is designed to pass beneath an active apron and connect to the terminal. The project is also anticipated to reduce traffic from Hebbal to the airport by 30 per cent, resulting in a decongestion of the Hebbal area. Initially proposed in 2016, the four-lane tunnel road will connect to state highway 104, which is currently being widened to four lanes by the Karnataka Road Development Corporation (KRDCL). Additionally, the new tunnel road will benefit motorists using the newly-constructed Satellite Town Ring Road.
