Bengaluru Launches Suburban and Circular Railway Projects

The Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP) and City Circular Railway Project aim to significantly improve connectivity between Bengaluru and its surrounding districts. To ensure seamless integration of these systems, a feasibility study has been initiated by the Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (K-RIDE).

K-RIDE has sought approval from the South Western Railway to conduct the feasibility study. Once completed, a detailed project report will be prepared, and work will commence pending approvals from state and central governments.

The Suburban Railway Project, designed to complement Bengaluru's metro system, spans 148 kilometers across four corridors. Key routes include: - A 41.4 km stretch linking Bengaluru City (KSRTC), the airport, and Devanahalli. - A 25 km corridor between Bannikahalli and Chikkabanavara. - A 35.5 km stretch from Kengeri to Whitefield. - A 46.25 km route connecting Heelalige to Rajanukunte.

The Circular Railway, planned to extend 287 kilometers around Bengaluru’s outskirts, will connect major regions such as Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, Malur, and Heelelige. Prominent sections include: - Nidavanda to Doddaballapur (40.9 km). - Doddaballapur to Devanahalli (28.5 km). - Devanahalli to Malur (46.5 km). - Malur to Heelelige (52 km). - Heelelige to Hejjala (42 km). - Hejjala to Solur (43.5 km).

Additionally, Rs 72 billion has been allocated for development in areas such as Malur, Heelelige, and Nidavanda. A crucial link between Nidavanda and Chikkabanavara will integrate with the city through Bangalore Cantonment station.

The Railway Department is also seeking approval for Phase 2 of the Suburban Railway Project, which proposes a 146-kilometer network expansion. New extensions include routes such as Chikkaballapur to Kunigal, Chikkabanavara to Dabbaspet, Kengeri to Hejjala, and Heelalige to Anekal Road. Approval of these plans will further enhance integration with the Circular Railway network. (ET)
