Bangalore Metro: 16 new interchange stations to revamp transit

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) announced plans to introduce 16 new interchange stations as part of its Phase 2 and Phase 3 projects. Currently, the Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Interchange station at Majestic serves as the city's sole interchange station, allowing transfers between the Purple and Green lines. It supports around 50,000 commuters daily, playing a crucial role in Bangalore's metro network.

According to future developments, the expansion will incorporate interchange stations strategically positioned across the city. These stations will connect the existing Purple and Green lines with the upcoming Yellow, Pink, and Blue lines, significantly extending the network's coverage. Notable upcoming stations include those at Jayadeva Junction, MG Road, KR Puram, and other key areas from Mysuru Road to Nagavara.

The Jayadeva Junction station, slated to open partially by the year's end, is expected to become Bangalore's largest interchange metro station. Situated on Bannerghatta Road, it will link the Yellow Line (RV Road to Bommasandra) with the Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara). The station features a double-decker flyover, designed to accommodate both metro and road traffic, thus reducing commute times significantly for travelers heading from Ragigudda towards Silk Board.

Regarding operational phases and impact, the Jayadeva interchange station will partially open alongside the inauguration of the Yellow Line later this year. Full operations will commence upon the Pink Line's completion. BMRCL officials estimate that once fully operational, the station could attract between 80,000 to 90,000 daily users, potentially becoming Bangalore's busiest metro interchange station after Majestic.
