Assam Halts Road Construction in Disputed Border Area

Road construction by Assam in a disputed border area has been halted, according to Mizoram's Home Minister Lalchamliana. This action comes amid ongoing tensions between the two northeastern states over territorial claims.

The halted construction was taking place in the Phainuam area, which Mizoram claims as part of its Mamit district. Assam, however, considers the region part of its Karimganj district. The boundary dispute between Assam and Mizoram has been a long-standing issue, often leading to skirmishes and stand-offs.

Minister Lalchamliana stated that Mizoram officials took immediate action after learning about the construction. The state government has consistently emphasized the need for peaceful resolution through dialogue and has sought central intervention to mediate the dispute.

The Assam government has yet to release an official statement regarding the halt in construction. However, the move is seen as a step towards reducing the tension that has flared up in recent months.

The boundary dispute between Assam and Mizoram dates back to the colonial era, with various agreements and notifications failing to resolve the issue conclusively. The latest confrontation follows a series of clashes that have occasionally turned violent, causing casualties and property damage on both sides.

Both states have maintained a dialogue through high-level meetings, but on-ground enforcement and adherence to agreed terms have proven challenging. The central government has also urged both states to maintain peace and avoid unilateral actions that could escalate tensions.

Mizoram's Home Minister reiterated the state's commitment to a peaceful resolution and expressed hope that the central government would expedite efforts to demarcate the boundary clearly, ensuring lasting peace in the region.

The situation remains fluid, with both states under close observation by the central government to prevent further conflicts and to foster an environment conducive to negotiations and a peaceful settlement.
