Amazon Reaches 100% Renewable Energy Target Years Early
Amazon announced a significant environmental achievement: it had successfully reached its ambitious goal of matching all the electricity consumed across its global operations with 100 per cent renewable energy, surpassing its 2030 target by a full seven years.Amazon has been recognised as the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy worldwide since 2020.
Amazon has invested billions of dollars into more than 500 solar and wind projects globally, solidifying its reputation as a leader in corporate sustainability. Kara Hurst, Amazon's Chief Sustainability Officer, commented that achieving the renewable energy goal was a remarkable accomplishment. She expressed pride in their early success and highlighted the company's ongoing commitment to sustainability. She mentioned that they would continue making progress and evolving towards their goals for 2040.
Since making its pledge in 2019, Amazon has initiated renewable energy projects in 27 countries, achieving significant milestones in countries like India, Greece, South Africa, Japan, and Indonesia. Amazon's efforts have also focused on advocating for policy frameworks that support the development of new solar and wind projects, thereby promoting large-scale adoption of green energy.
Amazon's headquarters in Virginia, known as HQ2, operates with zero carbon emissions, powered by electricity sourced from a nearby solar farm. Additionally, Amazon has installed nearly 300 on-site solar projects at its various facilities worldwide, including fulfillment centres and Whole Foods Market stores. Once fully operational, these projects are expected to prevent approximately 27.8 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
