Alstom, Titagarh & BEML Bid for Bhubaneswar Metro’s Rolling Stock Contract

A significant milestone has been reached for the Bhubaneswar Metro project, as three companies have submitted bids for Phase 1’s rolling stock contract to supply 39 standard gauge coaches (13 train sets) under Package BRS1. The bidding process began in July 2024 when the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) invited bids for the rolling stock contract, estimated to cost Rs. 5 billion, with a delivery deadline of three years. The technical bids were opened on 6 December 2024, and the firms that placed their bids are Alstom Transport India Ltd., BEML Ltd., and Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd. The contract entails designing, manufacturing, supplying, testing, commissioning, and training for 13 train sets (39 coaches) for the Bhubaneswar Metro Project. The trains will be deployed on the Blue Line, which spans 26 km from Biju Patnaik Airport to Trisulia Square, featuring 20 elevated stations. The new trains will have a 3-coach configuration: Driver Motor Coach (DMC), Trailer Coach (TC), and Driver Motor Coach (DMC), with a total capacity to accommodate 972 passengers. In line with the Make in India initiative, the contract requires that the majority of the trains be manufactured locally, with a maximum of three trains (9 coaches) being produced in an offshore factory. Contractors are expected to either independently or in collaboration with an Indian partner, establish local manufacturing facilities. The technical bids are now undergoing evaluation, and once completed, the financial bids will be opened to determine the lowest bidder for the contract. This development marks a crucial step in the progress of the Bhubaneswar Metro Project, which will play a vital role in improving urban transport in the city.
