40% of Kazipet Station Redevelopment Works Completed

The South Central Railway (SCR) is redeveloping Kazipet Railway Station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), with an investment of Rs 24.45 crore. The goal is to improve passenger comfort and modernise facilities, and 40% of the work has already been completed. The project is expected to finish by the end of this financial year.

The planned improvements include: a newly designed station façade with an entrance portico, a 12-metre-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) equipped with two lifts and escalators, platform enhancements, additional covered waiting areas, and upgraded toilets, including facilities for differently-abled passengers.

Further enhancements will include better waiting halls, landscaping, traffic circulation improvements, art and cultural displays in station areas, and upgraded signage, including train and coach indication boards.

Kazipet Railway Station, which was established in 1888 as part of the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR), is located on the Secunderabad-Delhi line and was historically a hub for transporting coal, cotton, and other goods. It continues to be a key junction connecting Warangal and nearby areas such as Hanamkonda to major cities across India, with an average footfall of 24,269 passengers per day and annual earnings of Rs 41.36 crore.

The station, part of the Secunderabad-Balharshah section, serves 98 train halts, including important superfast trains to destinations such as New Delhi, Howrah, Chennai, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Secunderabad, and Tirupati.

Kazipet is one of 40 stations in Telangana undergoing redevelopment as part of the ABSS, which is aimed at the long-term modernisation of Indian Railways, offering world-class facilities. The total redevelopment cost across Telangana is approximately Rs 2,737 crore, with significant projects such as the redevelopment of Secunderabad and Charlapalli stations, designed to ease congestion in the Hyderabad metropolitan area.

The ABSS initiative, launched by the Ministry of Railways, focuses on master-planned station upgrades to meet growing passenger needs and turn railway hubs into regional growth centres. The project gained momentum with the foundation stone-laying ceremonies by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2023 and February 2024.
